The idea
Mendel found that self-crossing F1 plants produced an F2 generation showing the dominant trait and the recessive trait in a ratio close to three to one.
In practice
Self-crossed violet-flowered F1 plants produced roughly 705 violet-flowered and 224 white-flowered F2 offspring, near a 3:1 split.
Where people slip
This ratio describes phenotypes in large samples — any small batch of offspring can depart from it by chance.
