The idea
Blending inheritance, the view Mendel's results overturned, wrongly predicted that offspring traits average their parents' traits and that a lost trait cannot resurface.
In practice
Blending inheritance would predict pale violet F1 flowers from a violet-by-white cross; Mendel found the F1 flowers fully violet.
Where people slip
A trait that looks blended, such as human skin tone, usually reflects many separate genes acting together, not one factor.
