Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6 AIL 0546 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Quatrain, Sestet, Octave, Tercet
Captions available
The idea
The glossary defines a quatrain as a four-line stanza, a sestet as six lines, an octave as eight and a tercet as three. Those four cover the stanza lengths the exam names, and the villanelle's five tercets and one quatrain can be read straight off them.
In practice
Four, six, eight, and three.
Where people slip
All four are glossary headwords.
