Trap: The Neighbouring Device

Captions available

The idea

Sample question one offers four other genuine devices. The distractor is always a device that is nearly right: assonance for alliteration, consonance for either, internal rhyme for assonance. Definitions must be sharp enough to exclude, which is why every entry above states what its term rules out.

In practice

The wrong option is nearly right.

Where people slip

Sharp definitions are the only defence.
