Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6   AIL 0519 short lesson, about 20 seconds

When a Line Will Not Scan Evenly

Captions available

The idea

Most metrical lines carry variations, and a poem is named for its prevailing pattern rather than its every line. Scan three or four lines and take the majority. A candidate who abandons the exercise at the first irregular line will misname metres that are perfectly regular overall.

In practice

Name the poem for its majority.

Where people slip

One odd line proves nothing.
