Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6   AIL 0520 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Why Variation Is Meaningful

Captions available

The idea

A substituted foot draws attention to the words it falls on. A trochee at the head of an iambic line, or a spondee in the middle, makes the reader slow down. The exam can ask what effect a variation produces, and the answer is usually emphasis.

In practice

Variation places emphasis.

Where people slip

Ask what words the variation lands on.
