Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6 AIL 0522 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Blank Verse Against Free Verse
Captions available
The idea
The glossary defines free verse as poetry without a set rhyme scheme or rhythm pattern. Blank verse has a strict metre and no rhyme; free verse has neither. The names sound similar and the forms are opposites in the respect that matters, which makes this a favourite distractor pairing.
In practice
Blank has metre; free has none.
Where people slip
The names mislead; the forms are opposed.
