Captions available

The idea

The glossary describes the Japanese haiku as a brief poem consisting of a single image, in three lines of five, seven and five syllables. Note that the count is syllabic, not metrical: haiku are measured by syllable number rather than by stress pattern.

In practice

Five, seven, five syllables.

Where people slip

Syllable count, not stress count.
