Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6   AIL 0518 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Scanning a Line

Captions available

The idea

The glossary has no headword for scansion. The procedure is standard: read the line aloud, mark the stresses you hear, group them into repeating units, then count the units. Marking before counting is the order that matters, because the count depends on the grouping.

In practice

Mark the stresses, then count.

Where people slip

Group before you count.
