Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6   AIL 0508 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Trochee

Captions available

The idea

A trochee reverses the iamb: stressed then unstressed, as in garden or tiger. The glossary has no headword for trochee, so this is the standard sense. Trochaic openings are common even in iambic poems, and a reversed first foot is one of the most frequent variations in English verse.

In practice

Stressed, then unstressed.

Where people slip

The glossary omits this term.
