Why the Iamb Dominates English

The idea
Ordinary English phrases fall into unstressed-stressed pairs without effort: the house, a book, to go. Iambic verse therefore sounds like speech rather than chant. When a line departs from it, the departure is audible and usually meaningful, which is what makes metrical variation examinable.
