Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6   AIL 0511 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Anapest

Captions available

The idea

An anapest is two unstressed syllables followed by one stressed, the dactyl reversed. The glossary describes the dactyl as the opposite of the anapestic but gives anapest no headword, and misspells the word in that entry. This is the standard definition, supplied because the anchor's is missing.

In practice

Unstressed, unstressed, stressed.

Where people slip

The anchor names it without defining it.
