Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 6   AIL 0513 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Naming a Metre

Captions available

The idea

A metre's name gives its foot then its count: iambic pentameter is five iambs. Learn the counting prefixes once, from one to seven, and every metrical name on the exam becomes readable without further memorising. The foot names were the harder half and are now behind you.

In practice

Foot name, then how many.

Where people slip

Learn the prefixes once.
