The idea
The comparative compares two things and adds -er or more. The superlative compares three or more and adds -est or most.
In practice
"Of the two routes, this one is shorter." "Of all five, this is the shortest."
Where people slip
Use one method, never both, so "more faster" is wrong. Good and well become better and best.
