ACT Preparation / Unit 3   ACT 0226 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Idiomatic Prepositions

Captions available

The idea

Some verbs and adjectives pair with a fixed preposition, and the pair has its own meaning. These expressions are learned as units and cannot be separated.

In practice

"Apologize for," "depend on," "capable of," "interested in."

Where people slip

The witness calls these pairings unique to English, so they are learned, not worked out. "Capable to" is the error.
