The idea
An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. An adverb describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb, and often ends in -ly.
In practice
"She is a careful driver." "She drives carefully." Good describes a noun; well describes how something is done.
Where people slip
Well is an adjective only when it means healthy. "He played good" should be "He played well."
