ACT Preparation / Unit 1 ACT 0002 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Subordinate Clause
Captions available
The idea
A subordinate clause has a subject and a verb but opens with a subordinating word such as although, because, if, since, when or while, so it cannot stand alone.
In practice
"Because the river flooded" has both, yet leaves the listener waiting.
Where people slip
The opening word is the whole difference: remove because, and the river flooded is a sentence.
