ACT Preparation / Unit 1   ACT 0011 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Sentence Fragment

Captions available

The idea

A fragment is a word group punctuated as a sentence that lacks a subject, a verb or both, or is a lone subordinate clause.

In practice

"We stayed for the encore. Hoping for one more song." The second group has no subject and no working verb.

Where people slip

Most fragments extend the sentence before them, so they sound natural aloud. Check each group by itself.
