ACT Preparation / Unit 1   ACT 0013 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Comma Splice

Captions available

The idea

A comma splice joins two complete sentences with a comma alone. A comma marks a pause; it cannot hold two independent clauses together.

In practice

"The tide came in fast, the children ran for the dunes." Each side is a complete sentence.

Where people slip

Read each side of the comma alone. If both stand, the comma needs a conjunction or a replacement.
