ACT Preparation / Unit 1   ACT 0018 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Parallel Structure

The idea

Parallel structure means items in a series, or ideas joined by a conjunction, share one grammatical form: all nouns, all -ing phrases or all clauses.

In practice

"The job requires lifting boxes, driving a van and to answer phones." Answering phones restores the pattern.

Where people slip

Line up the first word of each item: lifting, driving, to answer. The odd one out gets rewritten.
