ACT Preparation / Unit 1 ACT 0007 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Semicolon With a Transitional Word
Captions available
The idea
The third way to join independent clauses is a semicolon, a transitional word or phrase, then a comma. Examples are however, therefore, meanwhile, instead, in fact and as a result.
In practice
"The forecast called for snow; as a result, the school closed early."
Where people slip
Choose the transitional word by meaning: as a result for a consequence, however for a contrast.
