ACT Preparation / Unit 1   ACT 0006 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Compound Sentence: Semicolon

Captions available

The idea

A semicolon can join two closely related independent clauses with no conjunction. A complete sentence must stand on each side.

In practice

"The museum opened at nine; by ten the line reached the corner."

Where people slip

Use the period test: if a period could replace the semicolon and leave two sentences, the semicolon is allowed.
