No Comma After a Series or Before That

The idea
No comma follows the last item in a series, and no comma comes before a that-clause reporting what someone said or thought.
In practice
"Oak, maple, and birch, line the street" splits the subject. "The coach said, that practice was canceled" splits said from its report.
Where people slip
Each comma needs a job, and a comma with none is the error.
