ACT Preparation / Unit 2 ACT 0116 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Contractions, and Where Apostrophes Never Go
Captions available
The idea
An apostrophe also marks a contraction, standing in for missing letters. Apostrophes never form plurals, never go on verbs, and never go on possessive pronouns such as yours, its or whose.
In practice
"Don't" stands for do not. "Three apples," not "apple's"; "she runs," not "run's."
Where people slip
Plural and possessive sound alike, so ask whether anything is owned.
