ACT Preparation / Unit 2   ACT 0117 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Its and It's, Whose and Who's

Captions available

The idea

Its and whose are possessive pronouns, written with no apostrophe. It's means it is or it has; who's means who is or who has.

In practice

"It's raining, and the dog left its bowl outside." "Who's coming, and whose car is this?"

Where people slip

Expand the word: if it is or who is fits, keep the apostrophe; if not, drop it.
