ACT Preparation / Unit 2 ACT 0112 short lesson, about 20 seconds
No Comma Inside a Compound
Captions available
The idea
When and joins two parts of a compound subject, verb or object, no comma goes before it; that comma is for clause joins.
In practice
"The crew repaired the roof, and painted the porch" has one subject, so the comma goes.
Where people slip
Check for a second subject after the conjunction. No new subject means no new clause, and no comma.
