ACT Preparation / Unit 2 ACT 0110 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Serial Comma
Captions available
The idea
In a series of three or more items, a comma separates each item, including the one before the final and or or. That last one is the serial comma.
In practice
"We packed water, maps, and a first-aid kit."
Where people slip
Some style guides, such as AP, drop the final comma; that is a style choice, not a grammar error.
