Drill 4: Whose Work Newton Culminated
The idea
The fourth question asks which scientists' work Newton's is best viewed as culminating, and offers Vesalius and Paracelsus, Kepler and Galileo, Bacon and Boyle, Descartes and Leibniz, and Cardano and Pascal. The method the course drills at entry 0425 is to sort each pair by field. Vesalius and Paracelsus are anatomy and medicine, the body not the heavens. Bacon and Boyle are method and chemistry, the experimental program Newton used but did not complete. Descartes and Leibniz are mathematics and philosophy, and Leibniz invented the calculus beside Newton, a rival not a predecessor. Cardano and Pascal are algebra and probability. Kepler gave the three laws of planetary motion and Galileo the mechanics of falling and moving bodies, and the Principia of sixteen eighty-seven showed that one law of gravitation produced both. The answer is Kepler and Galileo, the heavens and the earth joined.
In practice
Sort by field: the heavens and mechanics point to Newton; medicine, chemistry and pure mathematics do not.
Where people slip
Descartes is the trap, since Newton argued against his vortices and the exam likes the name. A rival's work is not a culmination.
