Drill 3: Wollstonecraft's Position
The idea
The third question asks what is most representative of Mary Wollstonecraft's position, and offers extending the Revolution's promise to women, the Revolution as a threat to British life, defending inherited privilege, women devoting themselves to education not politics, and women confining themselves to husband and children. The course owns her at entries 0518 and 0615: in seventeen ninety-two the Vindication of the Rights of Woman argued that women seemed inferior because they were educated to be, and that the rights the Revolution proclaimed for men belonged to women too. Eliminate by author. The Revolution as a threat and inherited privilege defended are Burke's Reflections, which she answered first. Women confined to the home is Rousseau's Émile, her explicit target. Education, not politics, is a half-truth: she demanded education as the road to full citizenship, not instead of it. The answer is the first, and entry 0531 reads her own words for it.
In practice
The Revolution's promise, extended; the distractors are Burke twice, Rousseau, and a half-truth.
Where people slip
The fourth option is the trap, because she did write mostly about education. Her point was that education was owed because rights were owed.
