Equality Denied: Women, de Gouges, and Wollstonecraft

Captions available

The idea

Women stormed the Bastille, yet the Assembly never debated their rights. Olympe de Gouges answered with a Declaration of the Rights of Woman in seventeen ninety-one, and Wollstonecraft's Vindication of ninety-two made women's liberation the key to dismantling hierarchy for all.

In practice

De Gouges was executed; women's clubs were shut.

Where people slip

Neither found sympathy for a century, the anchor says.
