Drill 5: Why the Nazis Rose
The idea
The fifth question asks what was a significant factor in the Nazi Party's growth and rise, and offers Muslim immigration after the First World War, concern about British and French economies, industrialization's expansion, disenchantment with liberalism as weak and ineffective, and the party's support of labor unions. The course owns the answer at entry 1514, with the chart at 1530: the Nazis were a fringe until the Depression, and what they sold was a solution to the inefficiency of a Weimar Republic of thirty-two parties that had failed at hyperinflation and now failed at the slump. Eliminate. There was no Muslim immigration into Weimar Germany. Germans feared the Depression at home, not rival economies. Industrialization was fifty years old and not a grievance. The Nazis banned the unions within months of power. The answer is disenchantment with liberalism, the anchor's phrase: Germans' experience of democracy had been disastrous.
In practice
The chart's jump follows the crash; the party never won a majority; the unions were banned.
Where people slip
The fifth option is the trap, since the party's name says workers. Its practice was the opposite.
