Western Civilization II / Unit 5 WC2 0425 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Sorting Scientists by Field: Who Preceded Newton
The idea
The exam asks whose work Newton culminated, and offers pairs from different fields. The method is to sort every name by what it explained: the heavens and motion, the body, the method, or the mind. Only the first field feeds the Principia, and the witness states the chain: Kepler and Galileo gave the heliocentric theory credibility, and the work culminated in Newton.
In practice
Five pairs. Kepler and Galileo: the sun-centered laws of planetary motion and the mathematics of falling bodies; heavens and motion; Newton's antecedents, the exam's answer. Vesalius and Paracelsus: anatomy and medicine; the body; not the Principia's field. Bacon and Boyle: the inductive method and chemistry; method and matter; a false lead because Bacon inspired the Royal Society. Descartes and Leibniz: deduction and the calculus; the mind and mathematics; Leibniz invented calculus alongside Newton but neither supplied the astronomy. Cardano and Pascal: algebra and probability; mathematics, not physics.
Where people slip
The trap is Bacon, because the witness credits his method with inspiring Newton's society. Inspiration is not culmination. Newton's law unified Kepler's planets with Galileo's projectiles, and that is what culminate means.
