Levellers, Diggers, and Two Thousand Pamphlets
Captions available
The idea
Among the roundheads the Levellers argued for a democratic republic and the Diggers for common ownership of land. The army defeated both; their language survived into modern democracy. Censorship collapsed: the anchor counts over two thousand political pamphlets in sixteen forty-two.
In practice
Ordinary people arguing politics in print.
Where people slip
The names rest on the anchor alone. The exam spells Levellers with two l's.
