James II, a Catholic Heir, and William of Orange, 1688
Captions available
The idea
James II, king from sixteen eighty-five, appointed Catholics in defiance of the Test Act. When a son was born in sixteen eighty-eight, a Catholic line in prospect, seven Protestant nobles invited William of Orange, Dutch stadholder and husband of James's daughter Mary, to bring an army.
In practice
The English army defected; James fled to France.
Where people slip
Glorious, the anchor says, because bloodless and conclusive.
