The idea
War came in sixteen forty-two: parliament's roundheads, with Scottish allies, against the king's cavaliers. In sixteen forty-five Cromwell united parliament's forces in the New Model Army: disciplined, regularly paid, buying supplies instead of plundering, financed by London.
In practice
One in eight men fought, the anchor says.
Where people slip
The witness dates the wars sixteen forty-two to fifty-one.
