Cromwell ruled from sixteen forty-nine and took the title Lord Protector in sixteen fifty-three, the witness's date, governing through the army; his invasion of Ireland is still remembered with bitterness. He died in sixteen fifty-eight; parliament restored the monarchy in sixteen sixty.
