The idea
With the Vienna alliances wrecked, Cavour could play the powers against each other. He bargained with Napoleon III for French help, and in eighteen fifty-nine a French and Piedmontese army pushed Austria out of Lombardy. The price was Nice and Savoy, ceded to France.
