Western Civilization II / Unit 11   WC2 1003 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Piedmont-Sardinia, Vittorio Emanuele II, and Cavour the Architect

Captions available

The idea

Piedmont-Sardinia, an island and a wedge between France and Austrian Lombardy, had a Savoy king, Vittorio Emanuele II, and a constitution. Its prime minister Cavour, whom the anchor calls the true architect, felt no sentiment for "Italy". Piedmont's power was his aim.

In practice

The anchor's Piedmont borders Spain; it does not.

Where people slip

Cavour died in eighteen sixty-one, months after his work was done.
