The South as Loser: Tariffs, Brigands, and the Bandit Wars
Captions available
The idea
The south paid for the war of eighteen fifty-nine and a bigger army. Piedmont's low tariffs killed southern industries, and no money went to relief or roads. "Brigands" fought a three-year war that the anchor says cost more lives than unification.
In practice
The anchor: the south treated "almost like a colony".
Where people slip
The characterization is the anchor's.
