Western Civilization I / Unit 8 WC1 0719 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Tertullian's Question and Augustine's City of God
Captions available
The idea
Tertullian asked what Athens has to do with Jerusalem; the anchor misquotes it as Rome. Augustine of Hippo, writing as Vandals besieged his city, answered: the City of God is perfect, the earthly city flawed, the Empire irrelevant to salvation.
In practice
The Church as sole patron of scholarship afterward.
Where people slip
Tertullian rests on the anchor. Augustine and the City of God are witnessed.
