Benedict's Rule, the Monastery as Library, and Relics
Captions available
The idea
Benedict of Nursia, a monk, wrote his Rule about five twenty-nine at Monte Cassino, a witness name: a daily schedule of prayer, study and work. Monasteries became economic powerhouses and, after the West fell, centers of learning that hand-copied theology and some classics.
In practice
Every altar needs a relic; a trade plagued by counterfeits; pilgrimage.
Where people slip
The anchor calls Benedict a bishop. An abbot.
