Cluny and the Cistercians: Reforming the Monastery

Captions available

The idea

Cluny, founded in nine ten under the pope alone, freed monasteries from lay lords and supplied the reformers who made Gregory VII. The Cistercians, from ten ninety-eight, returned to Benedict's poverty and manual labor, with Bernard of Clairvaux their voice.

In practice

Reform meant freedom from lay control first.
