476: Odoacer, Theodoric, and the Kingdoms

Captions available

The idea

In four seventy-six Odoacer deposed the last western emperor and ruled Italy as king with Constantinople's approval. Theodoric killed him in four ninety-three and ruled to five twenty-six with dual Gothic and Roman governments. Germanic kings over Roman populations replaced the West.

In practice

A stable Gothic West but for Justinian: some historians' view, attributed.

Where people slip

The kings were officially Roman officials under treaty.
