The idea
At Marathon in four ninety Miltiades led about ten thousand hoplites against a Persian force the anchor puts at twenty-five thousand; Sparta arrived late. Afterward Themistocles spent Athens's silver on triremes rowed by the poor.
In practice
The anchor's dead: sixty-four hundred Persians to one hundred ninety-two Greeks.
Where people slip
The runner's death is almost certainly fabricated, the anchor says. The fleet mattered more.
