The Delian League Becomes an Empire
Captions available
The idea
The Delian League formed to keep Persia out and free Ionia. In practice members paid, Athens fielded the ships, forbade resignation, garrisoned allies and imposed laws. The treasury moved from Delos to Athens; Athens built on allied money.
In practice
Peace with Persia in four forty-eight, Callias on the witness, ended its purpose.
Where people slip
No witness dates the treasury's move.
