Western Civilization I / Unit 18 WC1 1711 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Sample Question Four: Isis and Serapis
The idea
The fourth sample question asks what best explains a change in Greek religious practice in the Hellenistic period, offering conversion to Zoroastrianism, the incorporation of foreign cults like Isis and Serapis, Buddhist and Hindu missions, adoption of monotheism, and abandonment of the pantheon for Roman and Phoenician beliefs. The method is to reject the options that replace Greek religion and keep the one that adds to it.
In practice
Greeks did not become Zoroastrians; the Persian faith stayed Persian. Buddhist and Hindu missions did not spread across the Mediterranean; Greek settlers in India were not missionaries. Monotheism came to Greeks only with Christianity, centuries later. Greeks never abandoned their pantheon for Roman or Phoenician gods; Rome borrowed from Greece, not the reverse. What did happen, unit 05 teaches on the witness at 0417, is that Greeks in the East adopted foreign cults and fused gods: Serapis made from Osiris, Apis, Zeus and Helios, with a temple in Alexandria, and Isis worshipped across the Greek world. The answer is incorporation.
Where people slip
The anchor has no section on Hellenistic religion, so this answer rests on the witness texts, and the course says so. The exam's word is incorporated: added to the traditional system, not substituted for it, and that is the distinction the distractors test.
