Captions available
The idea
Henry seized the monasteries' lands for crown and navy. Edward VI pushed Protestantism, Mary I restored Catholicism, and Elizabeth I, fifteen fifty-eight to sixteen oh three, required membership of the Church of England: high-church Anglicans, low-church Puritans, secret Catholics, and Presbyterian Scotland.
In practice
Six wives, three children, one settlement.
Where people slip
Elizabeth did not actively persecute Catholics, the anchor says.
