The idea
Philip had married Mary Tudor to recover England; Elizabeth refused him, backed the Dutch, and sponsored Drake, who burned a fleet at Cadiz in fifteen eighty-seven. In fifteen eighty-eight the Armada, the anchor's one hundred thirty-two ships, was beaten in the Channel.
