Italian Luxury Trade, Champagne Fairs, the Hanse
Captions available
The idea
Italians met caravans from China and Central Asia and carried silk and spices, worth more than their weight in gold, into Europe, breeding early banks. The Champagne fairs linked north and south; the Hanseatic League of German towns grew from Lubeck.
In practice
Roads new and Roman repaired.
Where people slip
Luxury trade made Italy Europe's banker. Unit 13 begins there.
