When to Create a Matrix

The idea

The method's Toolbox gives four criteria for deciding whether a thing deserves a matrix.

In practice

Step one: ask whether the thing affects legal compliance, safety or financial correctness. Step two: ask whether it appears in several systems or departments. Step three: ask whether it is central to reports and performance measures. Step four: ask whether changing it has caused surprises before. Step five: count the answers of yes. The book's rule is that two or three make the thing a good candidate for Gold, with a matrix. Step six: for a Gold candidate, plan the matrix's rows from the Toolbox list, and name its owner.

Where people slip

The fourth question is often the most honest guide. A thing that has surprised the team before will surprise it again.
